Why would you want to get healthy? Because ...
A Healthy Body Doesn't Get Sick
It's my basic belief that your body is made to be healthy and it's probably yours too when you think about it. I mean, it's pretty obvious really - when you get cut, you heal, when you fall over, you get up, when you get cold, you put on something warm. It's self-balancing, self-repairing system.
While everyone I talk to agrees with this, it seems that when people get sick, most of the time they just completely forget the basics. It should go something like this:
If I am sick, then something must be stopping me from getting healthy. What is it? Not enough of something I need or too much of something that's bad ... work it out ... make adjustments and health will naturally spring from the inside out.
But what usually happens instead is this:
SICK? How inconvenient! In this day and age I don't have to put up with this! What can I take to stop these symptoms from annoying me ... while I keep doing exactly what caused the problem in the first place.
The big problem with this approach is that whatever you were doing wrong before that made you sick will keep making you sicker if you don't change it. By covering up the symptoms, you are really just pushing the problem deeper inside and over time this can only be a disaster.
Healing from the Inside Out
So you can see, it really makes sense to get truly healthy from the inside out. In fact, when you are truly healthy, there is simply no room for 'conditions' or 'disease'. Sure, you might get a cold or a bout of gastro as your body adjusts to some new bug in your environment, but really that is a healthy response of your body to get those bugs out. And it really doesn't happen very often. Personally, I haven't had a cold for a few years. I did get one this year and it was gone in like 8 hours.
By it's very definition, "a healthy body doesn't get sick". But what if you do suffer from some disease? What if you have diabetes or chronic fatigue or arthritis? Should you treat the disease or focus on optimal health?
Optimal Health or Treat My Disease?
If you have some disease that is really causing you loss of life enjoyment or is even life-threatening, it makes sense that you would focus on fixing that problem first. Like if you have diabetes that is making you tired and putting you at risk of heart disease, loss of vision and loss of limb, you should really do something about that.
Remember though that most disease results from a loss of basic health in the first place. "A healthy body doesn't get sick." So whatever you do, you want it to actually build your basic body health at the same time as you get your 'disease' under control.
So while I think you want Optimal Health to be your ultimate goal, if you are suffering from some condition, I suggest your first goal should be to get that sorted by focusing your health-building in the places that will have the biggest effect on your condition.
How can you do that? You know, for almost every condition you can think of, there are people who have overcome that condition to lead a normal life. There are people who had high blood pressure who now don't. There are people who had severe diabetes who have beaten the condition. There are people who had chronic fatigue who are now bursting with energy (I'm one of those). There are people who had arthritis who now have no pain at all (I'm one of those too!). So I think that the first step is to know it can be done. The second step is to follow a program that has worked for others and is likely to work for you.
